RACE RECAP

Chase Elliott did what nobody at Martinsville Speedway expected — not even the man who led 292 of 400 laps. Denny Hamlin controlled this race from the drop of the green flag, sweeping both stages and posting the fastest lap of the afternoon (19.79 seconds). The No. 11 FedEx Toyota was the class of the field for 330 laps. Then Elliott pounced.

A caution on lap 325 — triggered by a massive Turn 4 wreck that collected Bubba Wallace, Carson Hocevar, Zane Smith, and eight other cars — bunched the field for a final restart with 75 laps remaining. Elliott, who had quietly worked his way from 10th on the grid to a top-three position, used the inside line on the restart to clear Hamlin into Turn 1. Once the No. 9 UniFirst Chevrolet found clean air, Elliott pulled away methodically, leading the final 69 laps and crossing the finish line 0.565 seconds clear.

Hamlin finished second with 292 laps led — the most dominant runner-up performance at Martinsville in modern history. Ross Chastain added a brief 14-lap stint at the front during a green-flag cycle, while William Byron (6 laps), Ryan Blaney (2), and Josh Berry (2) made cameo appearances atop the leaderboard. But this was a two-car race disguised as a full-field event, and Elliott's closing speed made the difference.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

01Chase Elliott led the final 69 laps to win his first race of 2026, scoring 63.4 fantasy points on a $13 salary. His 84 laps led were second only to Hamlin's 292.
02Denny Hamlin led 292 of 400 laps (73%), won both stages, and posted the fastest lap — scoring a race-high 85.2 fantasy points. His P2 finish earned 35 base points plus 29.2 laps-led bonus, 20 stage points, and the 1-point fastest lap bonus.
03A massive Turn 4 wreck on lap 325 collected 12 cars including Bubba Wallace (P36), Riley Herbst (P35), and Zane Smith (P34). The wreck reshuffled the finishing order and ended several competitive runs.
04Only 5 cautions for 54 laps kept this race remarkably clean for Martinsville. The average green-flag run of 57.7 laps rewarded long-run speed over short-run restarts.
05Austin Cindric was the stealth performer: started P6, finished P8, and scored 40 fantasy points with stage finishes of 5th and 6th. At $9 salary, his 4.44 pts/$ return was among the best in the field.
06Shane van Gisbergen's P11 from a P5 qualifying effort continues his strong 2026 form. The road-course ace has translated his speed to short tracks better than anyone predicted.
07Ross Chastain led 14 laps during a green-flag pit cycle but faded to P16, a disappointing result for a driver who showed genuine top-5 speed early in the race.
08The 8 lead changes among 6 drivers were low even by Martinsville standards, reflecting Hamlin's iron grip on the field for most of the afternoon.
