RACE RECAP
Chase Elliott did what nobody at Martinsville Speedway expected — not even the man who led 292 of 400 laps. Denny Hamlin controlled this race from the drop of the green flag, sweeping both stages and posting the fastest lap of the afternoon (19.79 seconds). The No. 11 FedEx Toyota was the class of the field for 330 laps. Then Elliott pounced.
A caution on lap 325 — triggered by a massive Turn 4 wreck that collected Bubba Wallace, Carson Hocevar, Zane Smith, and eight other cars — bunched the field for a final restart with 75 laps remaining. Elliott, who had quietly worked his way from 10th on the grid to a top-three position, used the inside line on the restart to clear Hamlin into Turn 1. Once the No. 9 UniFirst Chevrolet found clean air, Elliott pulled away methodically, leading the final 69 laps and crossing the finish line 0.565 seconds clear.
Hamlin finished second with 292 laps led — the most dominant runner-up performance at Martinsville in modern history. Ross Chastain added a brief 14-lap stint at the front during a green-flag cycle, while William Byron (6 laps), Ryan Blaney (2), and Josh Berry (2) made cameo appearances atop the leaderboard. But this was a two-car race disguised as a full-field event, and Elliott's closing speed made the difference.
